A home of the young at risk

The Chandigarh Administration has set up “Snehalaya” a home for the young at Risk at Maloya for children who live or work on the streets, laboring as porters at bus stands or railway terminals, as mechanics in informal auto repair shops, as vendors of food tea or man made articles or as rag pickers, beggars, picking through garbage and selling usable materials to local buyers.

Chandigarh Administration opened SNEHALAYA with the objective to bring the above children to the mainstream of life and rehabilitate them. It is to safeguard the street children from the abusive and hazardous life styles on the street.

On 27th October 2008, His Excellency Gen (Retd) Dr. S.F. Rodrigues inaugurated the first phase of Snehalaya – a home for 300 boys. On 2nd March 2009 another  phase for  300 girl children for the age group of 5 – 18 years was inaugurated.

This morning His Excellency  inaugurated  the complete set up of Snehalaya with one more  residential facility for 300 boys, the Administrative block, the Vocational Training Center with  different trades catering to the needs of young boys and girls. Besides Snehalaya have set up of  a multipurpose hall, a gymnasium, class rooms, recreational facilities both indoors and outdoors and library.

Children between the age group of 5 to 18 years are being admitted after the Scrutiny by the CWC  (Child Welfare Committee).  The children are admitted Children found on the streets, children working on the streets, single parent children, orphans, abandoned, handicapped, children having the impact of HIV/AIDS.

At present we have over 160 boys  and 105 girls. All the children go to different government schools and  private English medium schools. All the children have done very well in the Final examinations . Most of them came out within the first five in the rank of their respective schools. The bigger children who are not able to go to school are provided with Vocational Training – Computer education, Plumbing, Electrical, Dress designing, etc.

To enhance their sense of self worth, security and employment avenues, all the children will be provided with educational and vocational trainings.

Snehalaya has sufficient number of staff members as per requirement of the children. The staff works 24 hours round the clock. We have full time staff consisting of  wardens, watch and ward, care takers and house mothers etc.

The children are provided with free comfortable and dignified living conditions, with food, clothing, medical facilities, entertainment, development skills, indoor and outdoor games and sufficient time to pray for themselves and for others.

For developing the inherent talents for the children in cultural activities tie with the North Zone Cultural Center has been done.

Besides the above, proper medical facility is provided for the children in the campus wht the support of General Hospital sector 16 and PGI . Buses have also been provided for taking the children to and fro to  School and for outdoor activities.

To take all important decisions, to formulate rules and regulations and to make any amendments/deletions in the rules pertaining to Snehalaya an Advisory Committee consisting of ten members under the Chairperson of Honorary Director  has been constituted.
